Health Care Sharing Is Not Insurance

Health care sharing programs are not insurance and are not a substitute for major medical health insurance. Participation in a health care sharing program does not create an insurer-insured relationship, and membership does not guarantee payment or reimbursement of medical expenses.

No Guarantee of Payment / Sharing Decisions Are Program-Governed

Payment or sharing of medical expenses is not guaranteed. Whether a medical need is eligible to be shared depends on the program’s:

- eligibility requirements

- guidelines and membership rules

- limitations and exclusions

- waiting periods and administrative procedures

All decisions about whether and how expenses are shared are governed by the applicable program guidelines and are made by the program administrator in accordance with those guidelines.

Incident Amounts and Member Responsibility (ISA or Similar)

Many health care sharing programs require the member to pay a portion of eligible expenses before sharing begins. This may be called an Initial Unshareable Amount (ISA) or similar term. Members are responsible for their share amounts, incident amounts, and any expenses not eligible for sharing under the program guidelines.

Not an ACA Marketplace Plan/Subsidies Typically Do Not Apply

Health care sharing programs are generally not ACA-qualified health plans and are typically not eligible for premium tax credits or subsidies available through federal or state health insurance marketplaces.
